Elagabalus Æ 30mm of Philippopolis, Thrace. AD 219. AYT K M AYP ANTΩNEINOC, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust to left, holding spear and round shield decorated with head of Medusa / MHTPOΠΟΛEΩC ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΠΟΛEΩC, two naked boxers sparring: one stands to right punching with left fist, which is blocked with both hands by his opponent standing to left; NEOKOPOV in two lines in exergue. This otherwise unknown reverse type celebrates Philippopolis' traditional sports games in honour of the patron god of the city: Apollo Kedrisian. The games were held on the occasion of the Imperial visit of AD 219 and the assignation of the title of neokoros to the city itself.
